Chapter Ten

Carter

Fuck! I lean back in the tall oak chair and tip back the rest of the wine. I knew this was a horrible idea.

I let that Cupcake Witch lure me into dinner, now she’s luring me into her bedroom. I can’t go back there. I can’t check on her. I can’t—because the second I do, I’ll be ‘involved’. I’ll be the guy who gives a shit, and I’m not ready to be that guy again.

I pour more wine and take a bite into the crisp, garlicy bread she’s set on the table. It’s good. It’s really fucking good. Like the best bread I’ve had in my life. She probably made it from scratch. She probably started it when she was at the shop, brought it back with her. The sauce is probably a family recipe. And I’m probably a giant ass for not going with the flow.

I shake my head. The question wasn’t even invasive. It was just some silly nonsense bullshit that I could’ve just gone along with. I stand from the table and take another swig of wine, this time from the bottle. I should at least apologize. I’ll do it quickly, then I’ll leave.

Most of these old farmhouses are the same—master bedroom downstairs so when the farmers’ legs get tired with age, they don’t have to haul their asses up a flight of stairs. Wildwood was filled with old farmhouses just like this one, so I figure I’m knocking on her bedroom door, when I finally reach the room.

I tap on the door with my knuckles, waiting for her to let me in. She doesn’t reply, but I hear sniffling through the solid wood door.

“Lily, I’m coming in.” I open the door. She’s laid lengthwise on the bed curled into her side, her head now beneath the pillow.

I walk to her and sit on the edge of the bed, stressing about where I should put my hands until they land awkwardly on her back.

She stiffens and I regret my placement but it’s too late, I’ve already committed.

“Look, I’m sorry. I should’ve just answered your questions. Your garlic bread is good and I want to eat it.” What am I even saying?

Her body rises and falls quickly, as though a laugh has snuck into her tears.

Okay, that’s something.

“This is my fault. I shouldn’t have—”

She moves the pillow from her face, her hair now a wild mess as she tries to push it back. “It’s not just that. It’s everything. I should’ve come here. I was stupid to think any of this would work. I’m not meant for a small town…”

Couldn’t she just be happy with I’m sorry? I’m trying, but I’m not a miracle worker.

I let out a hard sigh. “You’re doing fine.”

“No, I’m not doing fine here. You hate me, I’m lonely all the time, and I can’t seem to make a friend to save my life.”

I feel my face contorting, my head sitting steadily on the small of her back. Should I move it? Should I say something? What should I say? I don’t want to be too deep.
